Richard Tell Associates, Inc. announces the latest release of RoofView®, version 4.15, a software analysis tool for evaluating radio frequency (RF) field levels at rooftop telecommunications sites produced by antennas of the type commonly used in the cellular, paging, SMR, PCS and conventional two-way radio communications services. The program is structured as a spreadsheet and is compatible with Microsoft® EXCEL® for Windows on the PC and the Macintosh. RoofView''s name comes from its ability to produce color graphic representations of the composite RF fields at a rooftop site produced by the simultaneous operation of many antennas located at different points and heights above the roof, providing a way of visually viewing the complexities of the resulting near-field RF environment. A data table within RoofView® maintains detailed information about each antenna at a site that is needed for calculating the RF fields. RF near-field levels are computed from either all or selected antennas by applying a model that takes into account the antenna''s aperture height, mounting height above the roof and the exact location of the antennas on the roof. Estimated, spatially averaged power densities are expressed as a percentage of a user selectable exposure limit depending on frequency. The entire roof is composed of one-square-foot pixels and RF fields are computed for each of these pixels for each selected antenna.
Several unique features of RoofView® facilitate its effectiveness in evaluating a complex antenna site for compliance with applicable rules and regulations for controlling human exposure to RF fields:
Composite RF fields are represented as a percentage of the selected exposure limit, automatically accounting for frequency in the computed results.
Each roof pixel is colored according to user selectable thresholds corresponding to selected percentages of the exposure limit and user selectable colors.
The RoofView® analysis may be prepared for any one of 14 different, user selectable RF exposure limits including the FCC adopted rules in 1996, the ANSI/IEEE 1992 standard and recommended limits set by the
International Commission on Non-ionizing Radiation Protection
, the
United Kingdom National Radiological Protection Board
, Australia and Canada as well as the CENELEC European Prestandard.
Irregular shaped roof tops may be defined, including detached roof sections.
Analyses may be run for either the entire defined roof area or, alternatively, for only user selected areas, speeding up the process when a large number of antennas may populate the roof and it is not necessary to examine the entire roof.
Selected antennas may be turned on or off at the choice of the user by a single double click on the antenna symbol displayed on the roof map.
The roof map may be enhanced by displaying certain information about each of the antennas such as its identification, coordinates, frequency, power, manufacturer and aperture height.
A special single pixel analysis mode of operation allows for detailed examination of RF fields through a special display of the contribution of each antenna to the aggregate fields at the selected pixel.
A statistical summary table is available for summarizing the results of each roof analysis showing the percentage of the defined roof area that has RF fields within various ranges of percentages of the selected exposure limit.
Symbols may be established in a symbol reference table and displayed, if desired, on the roof map along with the antenna symbols.

A convenient pop-up MPE Power Density calculator is available for analyzing the RF fields of a specific antenna. This feature allows for reading the technical data such as coordinates, frequency, power and aperture height directly from the underlying data table for a specific site or simply manually inputting this information about any antenna of interest from the keyboard. A handy reverse calculation feature permits examining, for example, what antenna power input would be associated with a given percentage of the MPE at a particular distance or finding how high a certain antenna would have to be mounted at to reduce the fields to a given value at a specific location; a special coaxial loss calculator function provides for convenient evaluation of transmitter input power to an antenna by applying user selectable coaxial cable types along with line length and transmitter output power. The colorized roof map results of each analysis can be saved for future reference through the use of a Snap Photo feature along with special notes relevant to the particular analysis accomplished.
An export/import file feature allows for the saving and using of compact text files that describe the roof shape and size, antenna layout information, detailed transmitter data and all pertinent RoofView® settings for subsequent reanalysis or modification (these files make it convenient to e-mail site data to colleagues).
A special feature can provide for time of day analysis if the appropriate transmitter up-time data are available for a site; alternatively, specific uptime duty cycles can be entered for specific antennas.

Built-in azimuthal radiation patterns for sector-type antennas allow for easy analysis of roof-tops having a combination of both omnidirectional and directional antennas. RoofView® automatically finds the resulting rooftop patterns of complicated RF field distributions and displays the results on your screen for further examination. The above figure displays the composite fields produced by three directional antennas and shows a hot spot in the center of the antennas created by the superposition of the fields from each antenna. Areas located between the hot spot and each antenna are actually less intense as illustrated by the colors. By selecting one of the user-set thresholds to represent 5% of the MPE, such as green in the example shown, rooftops can be examined from the viewpoint of identifying those regions of a roof within which a particular licensee may have responsibility for working jointly with other users to achieve compliance with the FCC rules for RF fields.
